On the Job: Women Launching a New Tradition




Former Speaker of the House,(ME) Representative Elizabeth "Libby" Mitchell introduces this program about women who worked in the South Portland Shipyards during WWII. More than 30,000 men and women worked in the South Portland Shipyards building hundreds of "Liberty Ships" and British "Ocean Class" ships during WWII. This program was produced by Southern Maine Technical College(now Southern Maine Community College)as part of its 50th year celebration of learning. Young women currently enrolled in welding classes at SMTC talk about their work along with women who were employed as welders at the shipyard during WWII.
